I am so busy lately with everything about art and illustration, but can’t find time for actually doing it (drawing). Tell you later all about it.

I always wanted to do some painting, but my colorbalance sense is so off scale, it never worked out. There must be a method that’s right for me. I’m good a grayscale, so let’s start there and see where that will take us .

Uprise of Dutch doujinshi circles

Sometimes, on rare occasions, I’m just wondering about actions en reactions of human behavior. Don’t worry it’s not mindbreaking stuff, but rather something for discussions.

Als ik nu in de wereld van doujinshi bekijkt is er al tijdje de derde, nieuwe generatie doujinshi bezig. als je een beetje thuis bent in de doujinshiwereld dan weet dat de keuze om een doujinshi circle te beginnen gauw gemaakt. of die keuze goedover is nagedacht betwijfel ik vaak. ik zie vaak innitiatieven komen dan gaan. de eerste generatie zoals ik het noem is de gold fish generatie. in 1995 heeft leon van hooijdonk, tevens een redactielid van aniway, de eerste nederlandse doujinshi circle opgericht. het was geweldig dat mensen zoals jij en ik die tekenen samen een club vormen en ook zelf kunnen uitgeven. het is toen ook niet gek dat veel mensen erbij wilden horen. alleen de tekenaars met de beste teken- en vertellingskwaliteiten konden er in komen. op dat moment kwam bij niemand op ook een circle op te richten. tegenwoordig zie op een conventie haast een verzadiging ban circle. en online schieten ze als paddestoelen iot de grond. de tweede generatie zag namelijk dat gf geen nieuwe mensen aannemen. ze waren heel erg selectief, niet onredelijk overigens. een van de reden is het te groot worden. Cheesecake studio is hiermee opgericht. Vlak daarna volgen andere initiatieven zoals Openminded,Neutral en Howling Riot. Al deze groepen hebben hun eigen kenmerken. Daarna kwamen nauwelijks circles erbij, want de meeste die redelijk goed kunnen tekenen zitten al een een circle. Mensen die niet in een circle zitten ging weer solliciteren en werken weer geweigert omdat zij dan vol zaten of omdat de tekenkwaliteiten van de sollicitanten niet hoog genoeg vonden. Ook zij zaten dan zo van af zij het kunnen dan kunnen wij het ook. Dit beschouw ik als de derde generatie. Bij enkele groepen zijn dit goed gegaan, zoals Pegasis, bij anderen niet, zoals passion. Waaraan kan het liggen dat de derde generatie zoveel moeite heeft met het overleven? Heeft de tweede generatie hier ook last van gehad?

Ik weet het antwoord, maar is het alleen maar een kwestie van onderschatten?

Anime2011 conreport

It has been almost 2 month since the convention ended. The con was a blast!! It was one of the best so far. I went there with mangaschool, a dutch group who aim to teach people to draw. Yay for free ticket! It was not completely free. I was there to help artists with drawing questions and to a workshop. As you might know my workshop was about coloring with copic. It was really basic, but stayed the whole night up on Thursday to make a perfect powerpoint. The workshop on Saturday went okayish. I was kind of nervous about how people will react. The workshop on Sundays went perfectly smooth. I really should thanks other teacher who assisted me. Kim, for reminding me the part i forgot to tell and help the people who came late. Sarah, who got me something to drink, adapter for my laptop (the battery died during the workshop), especially translate my workshop in English for one of the audience. My English sucks. Erwin, who was the technician/problem solver and being everything else, who the teachers couldn’t be. And of cause Jolein, being to stand in alone when other people of mangaschoolstaff were extremely busy.

I’ve met Adri van Kooten, a well known dutch comicker! It was awesome, though he doesn’t draw manga, I’ve learned a lot from him. He even reviewed my portfolio!

Areal vampire was there too as a model for life drawing class. I failed so miserable, because of manga. xDD

Artist Alley

Browsing and reading through the net, I become really in love with the huge artist alley like Otakon or the AnimeExpo. The fact that creative people are making merchandise in manga/anime style, makes me thrilled. Unfortunately, we don’t have a separated artist alley and a dealersroom. Simple, because it’s useless to separate artists and vendors; Hence, that there aren’t many of them. So anyone is cramped up in the dealersroom. But a bad thing though, since there are few artists; I can speak of experience. Mostly, because the anime/manga audience is not as big like in France, Germany or US. Moreover, the people here are too conservative when it comes to anime/manga. Let alone in art form. But that is some matter to be discussed in another post.

I always wonder why there are no artist tables in the dealersroom. (Perhaps occasional one or two, but that’s it.) We DO have doujinshi circles here. So in contrast in the other country we are like the Comicket, focussing in self publications and storytelling. Though, the comparison of the quality is like day and night. Okay, I might exaggerate.

After doing some research about the artist alley or an artist table, I would like to share with you. But still keep in mind that these stuff only give you a hint on what going on. It’s better keep these in mind and follow you own experience .

Copic trails

In the past I used other traditional media along side with copic. First, because copic was way expensive to colour thebbase. Second, because it’s much easier to create gradient with, for example, water colours. I was on day wandering weather it is possible to create a traditional art with the same look as it’s done digital. I am fully aware that traditional media has it limits, still I am sure it can be done to some point. The easiest way of digital colouring is cell colouring, how they are done in anime. Using lots of big cel, non comlex, areas. I can’t show you my first try – lost it, sold it, I don’t know anymore – but the picture above is my latest. It’s funny to see how I’m moving from one tool to another. The basic techinque is however the the same. It’s all about blending, and keeping the pigments wet, and layering. The picture about is coloured through a wet on dry method, very suitable for cell colouring. It’s not finished just, because I want to show some colouring during the workshop at anime2011. I also tried copic on my old drawing, but more about that later on.
